Tom Steadman is one of the most exciting new sculptors to emerge on the Kansas City art scene in the last several years.
Inspired by the medium of colored light, Tom has been creating illuminated sculptures using glass, plastics, crystals, exotic woods, metal and translucent stones.
His "HeadLights" are provocative multicolored lighted heads. Some are internally lit glass mannequin heads with lighted eyes and jewelry. Other heads are made entirely of light bulbs and LED lights. Each piece has a unique personality; some are almost mystical while others are whimsical – even comical. By virtue of the light they emit, many serve a dual function as a contemporary sculpture and a working lamp.
Tom’s "ArtLights" are abstract light sculptures that range from multicolored refracted light paintings to light bowls with glass rocks, crystals and multicolored light.
Since childhood, Tom has been creating all kinds of art and sculpture. He received a degree in fine arts from the University of Kansas and was trained by his grandfather (a master woodworker) in wood, plastic and metalworking. The unique furniture and lamps he designed in high school and college are centerpieces in his contemporary home.
Prior to sculpting full-time, Tom worked in theme park design for 10 years and commercial real estate.
HeadLights … ArtLights … custom-designed illuminated sculptures. Light is the new sculptural medium. Explore it, embrace it, enjoy an individually crafted piece by Tom Steadman that’s visually exciting and truly unique.
"As an artist, I have always been fascinated by the beauty of pure colored light.
Light can convey different emotions—from powerful, deep feelings to floating, carefree, even magical moods.
It can also be molded into different shapes, refracted into multi-faceted patterns, multiplied by mirrors, and made to dance provocatively.
I treat light like an expressive tool that allows me to explore the wildest reaches of my imagination in a quest to create dramatic new pieces that are as captivating as they are unusual."
